According to a Virginia State Trooper, an assistant police chief for Newport News that he arrested on charges of driving under the influence was “weaving out of her travel lane” and nearly struck another vehicle before she was pulled over.
According to the complaint filed by trooper Robert Bowers, Jr., he was told by 44-year-old Dawn Barber that she had consumed “a Texan-size margarita” approximately 30 minutes before he pulled her over.
Barber has been an employee of the Newport News Police Department for the past 20 years and oversees administration and support functions. On the night of her arrest, she was pulled over at approximately 9:40 p.m. and charged with DUI and reckless driving. Her blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.12 percent, over the legal limit of 0.08.
Barber’s license was also suspended for seven days. This was her first offense.
