A star tennis player for the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill has been charged with driving under the influence in a wreck that sent two fellow UNC students to the hospital on Sunday, August 17.
According to police, 20-year-old Chris Kearney veered off the road shortly before 2:30 a.m. on the morning of the crash. Kearney said his vehicle struck a wall before striking two women who were walking on the sidewalk.
According to UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour, the two women received transport to the hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.
Kearney was charged with two counts of inflicting personal injury, a felony count of hit-and-run causing personal injury, and one count of possessing a fake ID in addition to one count each of DUI and consumption of alcohol under the age of 21.
Kearney was being held in the Orange County Jail on $50,000 bond Sunday evening and made his first appearance in court on Monday.
Kearney, an Irvine, California resident, was the 2007 Freshman Player of the Year in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He ranks second on the team for singles and doubles victories and in 2007 was ranked third nationally among doubles players.
