Virginia Ambulance Driver Found Guilty Of Reckless Driving

In April, a 21-year-old Virginia Beach ambulance driver was found guilty of reckless driving after he ran a red light and subsequently killed an oncoming motorist. The ambulance driver, Jason Frye, was responding to an emergency call when he passed through the intersection of South Plaza Trail and South Independence Boulevard, driving between 5 and 15 miles per hour above the speed limit.

The Plaza Rescue Squad ambulance that Frye was driving struck a Mercedes Benz driven by Kielland Brandon, sending Brandon's vehicle crashing into a nearby utility pole. Brandon, who was killed in the accident, had been drinking before the crash, and was talking on his cell phone at the time of the accident. He was not determined to have been driving illegally under the influence.

In court, Frye entered an Alford plea, which means that there was more than enough evidence to convict him without his admission of guilt. As a result of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop charges of involuntary manslaughter against Frye. Frye was found guilty of reckless driving and sentenced to a 6-month suspended sentence and 2 years of probation. He was also ordered not to drive an ambulance for 2 years.
