According to court records, a charge of involuntary manslaughter against a man from Middlebrook suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and killing a Grottoes woman in May was certified by a grand jury in Augusta County General District Court on August 19.

According to Virginia State Police, 21-year-old Jeremy Rasnake fell asleep while driving his 1988 Ford Bronco north on U.S. 340 in May. The SUV then drifted across the double-yellow line into the oncoming lane and struck the car driven by 40-year-old Cheryl Sheaves, causing her to suffer critical injuries. She received transport to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville where she died the next day.

Rasnake was also charged with driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license. The Augusta County prosecutor’s office dropped those charges.
