The most punitive part of the sentence, calling for the teen to be detained until she turns 21 in September 2011, was suspended by Loudoun County juvenile court Judge Pamela Brooks. She also ordered the girl’s driver’s license be revoked and that she get a job to repay $5,000 in funeral expenses for the family of the victim.
On the night of September 20, 59-year-old Kathleen Becker died instantly after a head-on collision between her van and the teen’s sports-utility vehicle. According to the authorities, the girl had been “binge drinking” before and during a football game at Westfield High School, where she was a senior. Her blood-alcohol level registered 0.17, over twice the legal limit for adults.
The girl’s name was not released because she is a minor.
