Police often receive calls concerning motorists driving under the influence all the time, but they usually don’t come from the alleged offender.
On New Year’s Eve, a 17-year-old girl in Bismarck, North Dakota called 911 to report herself for DUI, according to police Lt. Randy Ziegler. He said that neither he nor anyone else at the department had ever heard of a similar incident.
The girl informed authorities of her location shortly before midnight on December 31 and officers discovered her in a parked car near downtown, according to Ziegler. She failed a sobriety test and police arrested her for failure to control her vehicle while intoxicated.
Ziegler said that the girl, whose name was not released because of her age, was not given a citation for drunken driving (DUI). He said that she had parked the car and placed her keys in her purse, but admitted that she had been driving for hours.
Ziegler said the call was likely a plea for help, as she said her life had been spiraling out of control and she had spent the majority of the time drinking over the past two weeks.
The girl was released to her parents the next day.
