After being struck on Interestate 81 by the vehicle of a man who had allegedly been driving under the influence of alcohol, A Virginia State Police Trooper had to be placed in intensive care for the severe personal injuries he received from the accident, which occurred in Smyth County shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, February 2.

Trooper K.S. Chapman was sitting stationary in his patrol vehicle after just finishing a routine traffic stop. Suddenly, his vehicle was struck by a pick up truck.

The injuries Chapman received left him in severe condition, requiring air transport for him to be taken to Bristol Medical Center.

The 32-year-old driver of the truck that struck the patrol vehicle of Chapman, Barry Dean Marshall, has been charged with a DUI. There are additional charges still pending against him.
