Preventing DUI Accidents
If you are hosting an event, and alcohol is served, there are preventative measures that you can take to stop a possible Virginia DUI accident from occurring. The first thing you'll want to do is make sure that no minors are going to be served. If you can, have a professional bartender serve the drinks, who will stop serving anyone who is too intoxicated. Another alternative is to host a cash bar, which means that you are not the one providing the alcohol.
As the host, you should always discourage your guests from excessive drinking. Encourage those who are drinking to use designated drivers. Another way to protect yourself and your guests is to provide alternative means of transportation. You can have a taxi service at the event to drive your intoxicated guests.
Or, if you see that a guest is unfit to drive, request the help of another guest to drive them home safely. In the worst case, if a guest insists on driving while intoxicated, you should take their keys, and let them sleep at your or someone else's home.
Even though Virginia laws prevent you from being charged with social host liability, it's always a good idea to use common sense and keep yourself and your guests safe from a Virginia DUI accident.
